Screen Printing Process

What is Screen Printing?

Screen printing involves creating a screen (a frame with wax-coated mesh) to produce a template. The wax is applied to specific areas of the mesh to create a negative of the logo or design.

Once prepared, a squeegee pushes ink through the screen onto the garment. Rotary carousel screen printing machines ensure consistent pressure and efficient production for larger orders.

Each screen applies one colour. By layering multiple screens, detailed and high-quality custom screen printed workwear can be produced accurately and efficiently.

Which garments are best for screen printing?

There are two requirements for a garment to be screen printed:

1. The garment fabric must be heat tolerant: This ensures the garment does not get damaged when placed through the heat dryer for ink curing.

2. The fabric or garment must be single-ply: This prevents movement during printing. Double-ply fabrics can shift and reduce print quality.

The Benefits Of Screen Printed Workwear

Vibrant Designs

Compared with DTF printing and transfer printing, screen printing produces some of the most vibrant colours and bold designs.

Production Speed

Once the screens are prepared, carousel machines can produce up to 1,000 garments per hour for efficient large-scale printing.

Big Order Friendly

After setup costs are covered, the incremental cost per garment becomes very small — making it ideal for bulk orders.

Variety

Screen printing allows metallic prints, 3D prints, puff prints, gradient effects and many more custom finishes.

Quality

Heavy-duty inks cured in dryers create a strong bond between garment and ink — ensuring long-lasting prints that won’t fade.

Versatility

While ideal for workwear blanks, screen printing can also be applied to paper, wood, plastics and other hard materials.

Simple

A streamlined method where ink is pushed through a template, making it efficient and scalable with automated machinery.

Screen Printing Colours & Effects

We're proud of the huge range of coloured inks that we use for custom workwear. We can accurately reproduce practically any shade through pantone matching our inks to your logo. Our inks wash well and retain their vibrancy over time.

To ensure longevity, we use specialised inks to produce stretch-proof designs that won’t crack or flake as the fabric moves.

We can also create a range of textures and finishes using specialised inks. Options include high gloss finishes, glow inks, pearlescent colours, glitter inks, and even raised “puffy” finishes to add texture to your garment.

Eco-Friendly Branded Workwear

Concerned about plastics? We can print with water-based ink onto cotton for an eco-friendly result. Water-based inks are more limited on dark colours, but they create a smooth and natural finish on lighter fabrics.

The sky is the limit when it comes to inks and finishes. Colours vary depending on the effects you want and the garment you choose. Get in touch to explore the best options for your brand.

What are the costs involved in screen printing?

A proportion of the cost of screen printing involves making the reusable screen, which is a major component of the set-up cost. For a one-colour print, one screen is required. For multiple colours, several screens are needed — increasing the initial set-up cost.

Screen Printing Team

We’re happy to produce small runs of garments, but larger orders tend to be more economical because the screens can be reused multiple times.

If price is a key factor in your decision, we recommend limiting your design to one or two colours to reduce setup costs. We can also suggest alternative printing methods that may be more budget-friendly.

If you have a multi-coloured logo and you're unsure how it will print, our team may be able to refine your artwork to reduce the number of colours. Feel free to drop us a message for a no-obligation discussion.

📁

File Type

We prefer Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator files at 300dpi, with each colour separated into its own layer.

If you don't have access to design software, our team can guide you through alternative options.

We Can Help

If you don't have a prepared file or aren't confident using graphic software, we can develop a suitable version of your image for print.

Simply send a clear, high-resolution version of your logo and we'll assist you.

✏️

Bold is Better (Usually!)

Bold designs stand out more clearly on garments and remain legible from a distance.

While gradients and shading can sometimes be printed, simpler and stronger designs often produce better results.

💡

Know the Limitations

Screen printing is an analogue process. Very intricate designs and fine details can be difficult to reproduce.

Small text and delicate lines may lose clarity when printed at reduced sizes.

The Disadvantages of Screen Printing

Multiple Colour Costs

Each colour requires its own screen. While setup costs are kept efficient, intricate multi-colour designs increase initial preparation expenses.

Multiple Screen Costs

Detailed designs with many colours require additional screens. In some cases, alternative printing methods may be more cost-effective.

Unsustainability

Traditional screen printing uses chemical-based inks. However, modern water-based inks and improved processes are making it increasingly eco-conscious.

...and finally, some screen printing myths that need busting!

"Colour gradients can't be produced through screen printing"

While once believed to be impossible, modern pre-production colour separation techniques allow experienced printers to reproduce gradient effects with impressive accuracy.

Our Screen Printing Equipment

Precision is vital when printing one colour over another. Our in-house production facility uses state-of-the-art printing presses to ensure professional results that pass strict quality control standards.

We regularly service and upgrade our machines to maintain accuracy and consistency. Combined with high-quality inks, this ensures wash-fast prints that maintain their vibrancy over time.

Manual Vs Automatic Presses

Manual

Manual presses are ideal for smaller runs and studio environments. However, as production volumes increase, manual processes become slower and allow more room for human error.

Automatic

Our automatic presses provide higher consistency, better accuracy, and improved curing control. This reduces waste, increases efficiency, and ensures faster turnaround times for larger orders.
